About the camps
Designed for students entering 6th grade, each of the 4-day camps meet online for one hour a day with host, Dawson Davenport and a teacher. In addition to writing skills, each class will also include an introduction to different Indigenous histories and stories. Each class is taught over Zoom by an Indigenous writer/artist who will also share some of their own work. Each class can accommodate 10 students. Students may register for only one class. All classes are offered at no cost to participants and sponsored in their entirety by Beloved Community Initiative.
Host: Dawson Davenport
The host for each of the three classes will be Dawson Davenport. Dawson is part of the Meskwaki nation and graduationd from the University of Iowa with a dgree in Art. Dawson is an artist, author, and clothing designer. He is dedicated to empowering the next generation, committed to helping preserve the Meskwaki language, and supporting Indigenous artists.
Creative Writing
THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL. The Creative Writing Class will teach entering 6th grade students about the creative process for writing a story, some writing techniques, and methods for staying creative in these times. Students will get an idea of what it takes to write a short story by the end of this class, and will be able to do a reading for those interested in performing.

Teacher: Cinnamon Kills First
Cinnamon Kills First is a published author, documentary filmmaker, and traditional beadworker. As a word warrior, she is dedicated to facing hard truths in order to bring about change. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Cinnamon is Northern Cheyenne and currently lives in Chinook territory, where she owns and operates Northside Advocacy LLC.
